Hello World Kubernetes Deployment

A simple nginx-based "Hello World" application deployed on Kubernetes.

Prerequisites

kubectl CLI tool installed
Access to a Kubernetes cluster
Valid kubeconfig file with permissions to deploy to the development namespace

What's Included

This deployment creates:

Deployment: 3 replicas of nginx serving a custom HTML page
ConfigMap: Contains the "Hello World" HTML content
Service: ClusterIP service to expose the deployment internally

Quick Start

Validate the configuration (dry-run):

kubectl apply --dry-run=client -f hello.yml --kubeconfig=./kubeconfig-dev

Deploy to Kubernetes:

kubectl apply -f hello.yml --kubeconfig=./kubeconfig-dev

Verify the deployment:

kubectl get deployments -n development --kubeconfig=./kubeconfig-dev
kubectl get pods -n development --kubeconfig=./kubeconfig-dev
kubectl get services -n development --kubeconfig=./kubeconfig-dev

Testing the Application

Port Forward to Access Locally

kubectl port-forward service/hello-world-service 8080:80 -n development --kubeconfig=./kubeconfig-dev

Then visit http://localhost:8080 in your browser.

Check Pod Logs

kubectl logs -l app=hello-world -n development --kubeconfig=./kubeconfig-dev

Cleanup

To remove the deployment:

kubectl delete -f hello.yml --kubeconfig=./kubeconfig-dev

Troubleshooting

Permission Issues

If you get forbidden errors, ensure your kubeconfig has the necessary RBAC permissions for the development namespace:

deployments (apps/v1)
configmaps (v1)
services (v1)

Pod Not Starting

Check pod events and logs:

kubectl describe pod <pod-name> -n development --kubeconfig=./kubeconfig-dev
kubectl logs <pod-name> -n development --kubeconfig=./kubeconfig-dev
